West Tisbury School SAC Meeting Minutes 12/13

In attendance: Mike Halt, Donna Lowell-Bettencourt, Ina Andre, Michele Ortlip, Sibel Suman, Jill Lane, Fran Finnegan, Nicole Cabot (guest), Aurora Austen and Jessica Sonia (student council reps)
Meeting got off to a start at 8:45 Mike gave the student reps. an overview of SAC.
It was discussed that we are still in need of a community rep. Sibel said she knows of a couple of people to approach. Mike said he could use help in this dept. Approaching people at the Council on Aging was discussed as a possibility, later in the meeting...
The difference between policy and procedure was brought up. Mike talked about the fact that the schools have been discussing putting a policy in place regarding head lice. Sibel asked if there is currently a policy in place. Donna said that there were differences of procedure in all the schools and that there should be unity among the schools...
Re. SAC: Ina said to read legal responsibilities. Mike said that School improvement is the big focus; the four pillars Ina - itʼs important for new SAC members to read the policies Donna - will send us SIP approval/acknowledgement information Mike discussed his wish for $12,000 for research and development, on School Committee agenda Nicole told Mike he was misquoted in the MV Times. He said he would take care of it.
Nicole addressed the student council members to update them regarding the changes desired for a new kitchen and about the School Committee meeting taking place at 5 regarding this issue. Nicole brought up that there is no information about Chartwellʼs.
The importance of food education as a whole was discussed and how the new kitchen changes offered a learning opportunity. Aurora said that food portions should be examined; some kids order three pieces of pizza, younger kids should get smaller portions, while 7th and 8th graders should get larger...
Nicole asked Aurora and Jessica to take a student survey re. if student would like breakfast smoothies offered.
Mike said that Laurie Halt was speaking at Howes House re. National Education issues. He said Laurie would come to our next (?) SAC meeting to share with us.West Tisbury School SAC Meeting Minutes 12/13
Ina brought up that 8:30 was a tough time to meet. Mike said he would email everyone to find out if there was a a better time for all, or to keep it at 8:30. Sibel brought up the fact that Nicole was added to the agenda last minute, Michele said that an email had been sent out the day before asking for Nicoleʼs inclusion..
It was decided that we should always put public comment on the SAC agenda We agreed to meet again before Jan. (at 8:30 for now...) since there wasnʼt enough time to cover all of our agenda.
